Joe Fried is regarded as one of the top truck crash lawyers in the country today. His passion for what he does is palpable, and his reputation speaks for itself. In addition to being one of the top attorneys in the nation, Joe is a recognized highway safety advocate and educational leader, sharing his knowledge with other lawyers on how to maximize results in trucking litigation. He has litigated cases in more than 30 states with record results and has given over 300 presentations to lawyer, judge, and police audiences on trucking and trial-related topics.

Joe has protected the vulnerable and fought for the deserving underdog since childhood. As a kid, he fought bullies in schoolyards and playgrounds. In high school, he was the guy who protected the unpopular student. At age nineteen, Joe became one of the youngest police officers in Atlanta, Georgia, working 80-hour weeks while attending undergraduate school. As a police officer, he investigated hundreds of crashes and crime scenes and spent numerous hours in courtrooms. Joe learned that justice is not blind, and people are always not treated equally in a courtroom.

More importantly, he witnessed firsthand the difference a good lawyer can make.

Joe graduated with highest honors from Oglethorpe University, then with honors from the University of Georgia School of Law. He served as an attorney law clerk to the honorable B. Avant Edenfield, Chief U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Georgia. In 1994, Joe entered private practice in Atlanta and was also appointed as a part-time Magistrate Judge in Fulton County, Georgia. He was hand selected by then-chief judge Charlie Carnes and was the youngest judge to ever have been appointed in Fulton County, Georgia. Joe served as a part time judge for 20 years while simultaneously building and running a serious injury law firm with a national reach.

After years of successfully handling defective automotive product cases, it was time for a change. In the fall of 2006, everywhere Joe turned he saw news of another truck crash. Recalling his work as a police officer on the scene of horrific accidents, he felt called to this area one night, in the early hours of the morning at 3:00 a.m. That very day, he was retained in his first truck crash case. Industry colleagues thought he lost his mind, since no one was focusing their practice so narrowly at the time, but Joe believed he could make a difference. He dedicated himself to learning every possible discipline of the commercial vehicle industry.

When he saw that other lawyers were treating trucking cases as if they were simply “big car” crashes, he realized there were errors in that approach and developed innovative techniques based on the factors that made trucking cases unique. Mechanical testing, understanding cargo loading, weight, weather impacts, and the driving dynamics all brought keen insights to help present his client’s case thoroughly, and return the maximum result possible. The successes started coming quickly and news of them spread nationally. Instead of keeping the concepts and knowledge to himself, Joe began sharing with other lawyers across the United States. He had a vision that improving how truck crash cases were handled nationally would make a positive impact on highway safety.

To help lawyers represent their client’s better against billion-dollar trucking giants, Joe co-authored with his partner, Michael Goldberg, Understanding Motor Carrier Claims. Now in its sixth edition, the book’s tactics have been used by thousands of lawyers throughout the U.S.

Joe brings to his cases uncommon multidisciplinary training and experience. This includes a thorough understanding of physics, engineering, forensics, biomechanics, human factors and accident reconstruction. His background gives him a strong edge investigating cases, communicating with law enforcement, working with experts and taking on technical witnesses at trial. Along with his insight, Joe has a strong background in psychology, psychodrama, story development and telling, neurolinguistics programming and persuasion sciences. These skills are invaluable for finding and presenting the compelling story of a case. Joe is known for creatively approaching his client’s case strategy, development and presentation, and his work is emulated by attorneys across the country.

Joe enjoys the honor as a faculty member of prestigious Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College in Wyoming and a regular lecturer at 360 Advocacy, where he equips other trial lawyers on how to gain a greater understanding of their client’s needs and win the best recovery on their behalf. More than a teacher, he is a trailblazer and dedicated years of his career towards founding the first-ever Board Certification in Truck Accident Law. Joe was the first of only 12 attorneys in the US to hold such a certification, making him a Specialist in this area.

He is the Founding Chairman of the Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys, and over 95% of Joe’s cases are sent to him by other lawyers who know about his abilities and track record.

Joe was named Trucking Trial Lawyer of the Year in 2014 and 2015 by the American Association of Justice Trucking Litigation Group, Best GA Personal Injury Lawyer by Best Lawyers in America in 2016 and has been named a Super Lawyer every year since 2007. His cases have received national attention from countless publications, including The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.
