Derek Hilley is one of the founding partners of Hilley & Solis Law Firm. He is a graduate of the University of Texas Business School in Management Information Systems (2001) and St. Mary’s School of Law (JD 2008).
After law school, Derek was an associate attorney for the law office of S. Mark Murray handling matters involving commercial litigation and estate litigation. He worked at the Bexar County District Attorney’s office to gain trial experience. He tried over 65+ cases to verdict. He worked in the Family Justice Unit prosecuting challenging cases of sexual abuse of children and family violence. He was later promoted to the White Collar Division Elder Fraud unit. This unit worked across all courtrooms in the Bexar County Courthouse. As part of the White Collar Division Elder Fraud unit, he was able to target individuals and companies taking advantage of the elderly in our community. He prosecuted traveling groups that would target the elderly and criminal enterprise that engaged in financial crimes. It was during this time he spoke to many groups, corporations, and hundreds of people educating our community on the scams occurring in San Antonio and nationwide
Derek is active in the San Antonio Bar Association and serves on boards in San Antonio. This includes being a San Antonio Bar Association board member the past four years, serving on the Texas Exes board, and was selected to serve on the Federal District Court Magistrate Selection Committee for San Antonio. He is active in Federal Bar Association, American Bar Association, San Antonio Trial Lawyers Association. He has been voted Best San Antonio Lawyer from 2015 to the present, San Antonio Rising Star in 2016, Top Personal Injury (Plaintiff) Lawyer 2019 to present, and was listed as #3 attorney on the Top Criminal S.A. Criminal Lawyer in 2019 as nominated by his peers.
After leaving the Bexar County District Attorney’s office with over 8 years of experience, he joined Carlos A. Solis in founding Hilley & Solis Law practicing Personal Injury law, Employment Litigation, and criminal matters by referral. Hilley & Solis has litigated the full spectrum of cases involving many class action lawsuits involving hundreds of individuals, Fair Labor Standards Act litigation, cases involving the Office of Foreign Assets Control regarding the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, to fighting for individuals against large insurance companies. Being trial tested in the court room allows Hilley & Solis’ clients distinct advantages when practicing against large corporations with billions of dollars.
In his spare time, Derek enjoys spending time with his children, running, hiking, and traveling.
